THE PATH LESS TRODDEN - ONE MAN AND HIS ART
The autobiography of Don McNeil, artist, musician, impresario, philosopher and above all a maverick of our time. Here is a book like no other I have read; it can be read at one sitting of only a couple of hours. To do so would be to miss the beauty and depth of the written word and the vivid paintings that accompany them. Every short vignette is to be savoured. Don’s writing is as his paintings; devoid of detail, each chapter a momentary burst of energy that opens the curtains to the vast world beyond. The readers or viewers of his paintings are prompted by the short punchy sentences to fill in the details for themselves. There is a humility in the telling of his many successes; no mention of the rave reviews of his theatrical productions, little said about the many famous people he has met and befriended throughout his life, but much about the less known lifelong friends, artists and musicians that have never made headlines. Maybe I’m a romantic but if so, that’s what reading Don’s book has done to me.
